Discover hands on engineering and technology as students learn about flight and drones.
We will start by instilling an understanding of flight principles such as Bernoulli's Principle, airfoil shape, and atmospheric pressure effects. After the camp students will have a clear understanding of the forces acting upon a plane or drone such as drag, lift, thrust, and weight. We will learn to stabilize an airplane against three separate rotations: yaw, pitch and roll.
We will also build a card stock plane to practice our maneuvers on.
After students become flight experts they will begin their drone education by first by becoming comfortable on a training simulator on our app. We will learn basic FAA regulations for flying (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs or drones). We will determine how to measure wind speeds and to determine the safe wind speed for flight. Students will learn the maximum distance and flying level of their drone. We will then go through a pre-flight check list to make sure our drone will fly!
As we learn to program the drone, we will move up to line-of-sight piloting where students will take a "Dronie" (selfie from the air). We will calculate additional flight paths such as the spiraling square and have a great time flying our drones!
In addition to the Phantom 3 Drone, we will have many stunt drones on hand to practice our remote controlled planes as the do a series of stunts.
